As a part of the Melbourne Open House Day, our third visit was to the Hellenic Museum located in the Old Mint ( the kind that made coins not the sort you inevitably find a little sticky in an old coat pocket).

I have wanted to go here for a few years now – I loved the idea of seeing inside this gorgeous building that feels more English Manor (ohhh butler!) than Greek Museum.

A giant corridor runs through the middle leading you to a charming outdoor space (rare in the CBD) and on the left was a series of richly wooded rooms with a variety of antiquities and art on display. What I loved the most was the beautifully displayed old photos showing people at work and play across the last hundred years.

I found this image of Greek Women circa the 1930s intriguing. I couldn’t help but wonder what there lives were like, why they were gathered together and were they happy? I then graciously selected three future faces for Bean, Dino and I. As the girls were shall I say less than thrilled with my choice I shan’t share….can you see a future you here?

I was also charmed by this dapper gentleman also viewing the photos. How smart he looks in this age of jeans and “twenty years younger”.

Once we had studied photos, urns and soaked up a little Melbourne Winter sunshine (rare) we headed out the front and took our very own Greek Statue Shadow Photos!

The museum is open Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm. Am glad as a part of MOH we were able to visit on a Saturday.
