A visit to Maling Rd, Canterbury, is a little like stepping back in time, so every so often when you feel the pull to spend some leisurely time brunching and browsing this is the perfect spot. The verandah lined streets are filled with gift shops, antiques, boutiques, jewelers and cafes. I should be upfront and say it’s more of a girly street than a boyish street and has a natural lean to the older generation. However, I can’t recall a time when I haven’t loved going for a stroll down the street, poping in and out of the stores and sipping a coffee.

Yesterday you may have read that we brunched at Ruby T’s where we had a scrumptious Devonshire Tea complete with china tea cups and linen table cloths. Afterwards we went for both a stroll (because strolling is precisely what one does on Maling Road) and a gentile perusal (again, precisely) through the shops.

As we ambled (as acceptable as strolling) I found several stores that suit my tastes perfectly and had to resist the strange pull to own an embroidered handkerchief. Am sure I shall regret this non purchase on a regular basis – I seem to be seeing constant (non nose blowing) uses since. Isn’t that always the way? This street always makes me feel like I should be wearing a full length dress, gloves and a hat that sits just so.

There is a fantastic antique store worth a good browse with all sorts of items from across the ages, a home-ware store with beautiful pieces, an old fashioned sweet store, a interior design store and Wildflower – a beautiful restaurant I really hope to visit one day.

I would encourage a visit here for some ‘me’ time, perhaps a mother daughter stroll or even a dear chum catch up. In November they are also having a special evening where they will be open for late night shopping. Perhaps I will see you there?
