Yesterday I visited the best hairdresser in Melbourne – Sunny Ave with the wonderful Sunny. I first discovered Sunny (and her name suits her!) when she worked at a salon on Russell St a few years ago. Bean and I were headed to the Writers festival as volunteers and I suddenly decided I desperately needed a hair cut. Haircuts for me are often instantaneous decisions. Very instantaneous.
Anyway so day of the festival we wandered into this salon and Sunny was able to see me, little did I relies how lucky I was! Sunny is a fantastic hairdresser and is brilliant with my long hair and always seems to have a long list of dedicated clients. Anyway a few months ago I popped in to make an appointment and I was told she had moved on to her own salon! Thus Sunny Ave Salon began.
It is a gorgeous little salon based in the very bottom of the Foundry Building off Lt Collins St. It’s got a real warmth to it with a a blend of bare concrete, old fashioned photos, exposed blue stone, cute knick knacks, shiny white tiles, metal beams and a recently added projector playing films onto the ceiling! While I was there they had Singing in the Rain playing with subtitles and Michael Bubble crooning in the background. It was such a great idea and I loved rewatching this classic.
My haircut (very long hair) was $50 and included a heavenly wash and head massage, a fantastic cut (done both while the hair is wet and again while dry – I love when they do this as i think it makes a better allowance for my actual hair) and then a blow dry and style. It’s fantastic value.
I can’t recommend Sunny and Sunny Ave enough. The fact that she is always solidly booked since I found out she moved shows me lots of others think so too – but she often manages to squish me in! And now I have shiny pretty new hair. Yay!
