This is one of those places where you almost want to pinch yourself as you walk in. It’s exactly how a cafe selling sweet cakes should look. Exactly. Its even situated perfectly at the foot of the quirky charming Rathdowne Village, a favorite haunt of mine.

On Sunday with yet another beautifully sunny morning spreading out in front of me I decided it was the perfect day to have an impromptu picnic in the park. I will be honest here that I generally spend an hour or two most weekends at the park so Binky can have a nice play outside. But with the sunshine tempting me I grabbed my picnic blanket, kindle and water bottle and decided I was only lacking the perfect sandwich.

I headed to Sweet Source to try out their sandwiches which I had eyed off on our last brunch visit (they do a delicious hot brunch – but it’s not the traditional fry up). I selected a Ricotta, pine nuts and artichoke heart sandwich that was toasted to a golden brown and packaged in a brown paper bag for me to take on my picnic.

While the toaster grill was doing it’s thing I took some time out to drool over the scrumptious cake display. These aren’t super fancy hestonesque inspired cakes. These look like they are made with butter and eggs and flour and like they belong to a world of smiles and aprons and fresh flowers. Think of crumbles and angel cakes and cupcakes and toasty muffins and…and…and (no longer laughing at my use of the term drool are we?)

I took my sandwich and fled temptation (I am sure I will be back – the round pink ricotta cakes looked like heaven – girls you up for cake and tea at mine soon?) heading to Fitzroy Gardens. All in all a lovely Sunday.
