Our 6th stop as part of our Melbourne Open House Day expedition was the Plaza Ballroom. This is one of those places that must surprise everyone the first time they walk through the doors. Tucked under Miss Louise (a Melbourne Shoe institution) and the Regent Theatre you enter through grand doors and head down a sweeping stairway to a reception area.

This place specializes in events, conference dinners and weddings so it did make me laugh when I was told to leave my water bottle upstairs in case I spilled. Last time I was here I was one of the few not drinking red wine.

From the reception space you can sweep down another set of stairs (or a ramp) and you enter a giant hall in a nineteenth century rococo style. To me it’s always felt more medieval but I would say that has more to do with the lack of natural lighting and my poor knowledge of architectural styles then the actual decor.

While it feels like is been locked beneath Melbourne forever (it was originally built in 1929) it actually spent many years (until 1994) flooded and created a small subterranean lake as leaky water feature in City Square destroyed most of the hall. What we see now has been pulled together from old photos, and is impressive.

How cool a place is this, and for all of us walking along Collins St with no idea whats beneath our feet. I still have so much more of this city to explore!

  1. How amazing is the Ballroom? About four years ago I worked at a TV production company and we filmed a Silverchair video there and it was really cool to have complete behind the scenes access. Such an amazing space!

    • What an amazing experience to have been involved in! It sounds like this place has strong ties to the music world as I believe Katy Perry used this place for a giant party/impromptu concert when she was here last.
