When Berry told us about an amazing Cuban Speakeasy in the East Village I knew Cienfuegos had to be on the visit list. Tucked away in the East Village, hidden up a set of curtained stairs this place isn’t easy to find. But it’s worth it.

We arrived late on a Wednesday night to a semi filled bar and were lucky enough to find a table that could easily accommodate the four of us. This bar is gorgeous, decadent without being feminine and really interesting.

We were handed our menu by a friendly waiter and advised that the punch bowls were the way to go.

Punch? Yup that’s right while this place serves cocktails and regular drinks it specializes in punch. The punch ranged from Seasonal to spiced from fruity to flighty and light to strong. No shortages on options here. We settled on a punch after a little debate and enjoyed soaking in the atmosphere and music around us.

Our rum based punch (the small bowl suitable for 2-4 people) arrived quickly and in a beautiful silver punch bowl with each of us with a different punch glass. The bowl sparkled in the lights of the bar and in the middle rested a giant ice cube cooling the delicious alcohol and slowly melting to cool the drink. It was lovely, and being able to serve ourselves made it seem all the more fun and special.

Cienfuegos is one of those places that makes you feel in the know and I love the trend in New York at the moment of the prohibition style Speakeasies.
