This bar tucked away on Church St in Richmond had been on my hit list for nearly two years. I am a sucker for the unusual, unique and quirky and this is something Melbourne delivers with ease. This place makes Melbourne’s usual offering seem…well tame.

Locating it is either incredibly easy (if you write down the address and have a smattering of German) or incredibly difficult (if you are the type to look once on a map, get a general idea and go). Which do you think in am?

Fortunately Lamb being a local was able to telephone guide us in. It wasn’t far as were standing about 2m from the door – see my map reading was pretty good.

I love the fact that a doorbell was involved, and on a rainy sleepy Tuesday night there is something a little Narnia-ish about having a bar door opened for you at the ring of a bell. It’s important to note that as part of their ten year anniversary they have made this a members bar so for the commoners amongst us we can only get in if the members haven’t filled the bar! (membership comes for a fee but has lots of very cool perks)

Dino and I joined the others at the bar where they were sipping on their amuse bouche (complimentary) in little brown bottles steaming with dry ice. How cool. The rooiboss infused gin was a lovely start.

The bar is dark with bottles suspended on bungees above the bar, small booths and an inviting bar. It felt like a speakeasy and had that great ability to provide an environment where it was intimate, trendy and easy to hear each other.

We ordered from a menu of exotic sounding drinks guided by a sweet/sour/dry/spice matrix.

As our drinks came out we were given instructions, sometimes complex, about how to drink them. Every element was a performance from the creation watched at the bar, to the presentation in an assort of forms to the actually drinking.

Our drinks came in syringes, medicine bottles, smoked, on fire and with flavored bubbles. Cool. We thoroughly enjoyed it and think it should be an at least one visit compulsory Melbourne institution. The cocktails ranged from $20 – $25 and we all thought they were well priced considering the effort and complimentary starter drink. Each of the drinks we tried were on the complex side making one enough for us. Although they do offer flights of drinks for those of you looking for something more adventurous.

The two guys who run this place are in the process of opening a bar/cafe Bar Americano in Presgrave Place in the city. I can’t wait to check it out.
