Do you ever make a find…the kind that makes you feel like you have stumbled into somewhere a little magical? Gewürzhaus, a herb and spice merchant on Lygon St in Carlton, Melbourne, is as close to an adult lolly shop as I have found. Walking up Lygon beneath  this afternoons massive down pour (that Melbourne managed to carry out with its usual flair) the warm glow of light emanating beckoned my bedraggled self into the wonderland.

Row upon row of spice blends, herbs, teas, sugars and salts in a serve your self extravaganza fill the room. They use sweetest little decorated paper bags and stickers with little stories about the spice make this a true experience as you make your purchasing decision.

The two lovely Gewürzhaus attendants were happy to allow me to peruse my way through the store, inhaling all the amazing aromas and reading the descriptions of the blends and admiring all the accesories that were very sweet. It was the perfect way to avoid the storm, dry off and to try a few new options (although I can guarantee I am about to become a regular).

I settled on five little bags selecting a winter soup spice, that I have already used to make a delicious clear soup this evening, I then went with a Moroccan Souk Spice which I plan to add to all manner of things.

My sweet tooth then reigned with a Masala Chai Sugar perfect for adding to tea, coffee or hot chocolate -yum!

I also picked up a cardamon and pistachio sugar to add to youghurt or perhaps pancakes or French toast as the label suggests. Yum, yum!

My final purchase was a chocolate spice to add to a hot chocolate or coffee. I have every intention of trying this one before bed this evening with a blend of Cassia, coriander, ginger, clove and nutmeg with Dutch cocoa I know I am going to have lovely dreams tonight. Yum, yum, yum!!

The spices/sugars/herbs started at $0.40 for 10grms with a minimum of 20grms per purchase and you can grab as much or as little as you like…they also come with care instructions for storage and are preservative free.

Gewürzhaus feels a little like someone has taken a souk bazaar and placed it into quintessential English village store. I love it and have several friends I must now take for a visit! I haven’t seen anything else like this in Melbourne and to be honest any where else in the world.
