Ok, the Census is really more of a Nationwide thing, in fact it’s been 100 years since the first time it was Nationwide, but I figure most of Melbourne is participating in it tonight.

This is my first census as an independent adult when I have been in Australia on census night – and I have been weirdly excited about it! I love the idea that in 99 years my data will be out there should anyone care to look at it. Of course they won’t. But still.

Bean, Dino and I all headed to The North Fitzroy Star to complete our census forms over a glass of wine and some snackage. Dino completed hers on the provided form, I completed mine electronically on my iPad (we weren’t given forms which I was rather sad about) and Bean interjected with pithy comments as she had left her form at home.

Completing the form on my iPad was incredibly easy and it was fun to talk about what the odd question meant or how it would be answered.

The North Fitzroy Star is one of my favorite pubs in Melbourne. It feels a bit like being in a traditional English ye olde pub (not gastro or weatherspoonesque) but quirky, charming with nooks and crannies and lots of little rooms to get lost in. There is space for intimate groups and large gatherings all without ever feeling generic or try hard. They also have the whole placed lined with the orange penguin novels (love love love) and I always mean to have more of a browse than I do. They have a number of fireplaces to snuggle up next to and even some old boardgames.

The menu is compact but has more than enough options to keep everyone happy from share plates to proper meals (more glam than typical pub fare too). We generally grab a few of the share plates and have never been disappointed. Their wine list is well balanced yet compact and have yet to have a bad glass. We like to call this place “our local” and have escaped here a few times to catch up or play board games with friends (yes we are those girls…and before you think you can judge us…we even have brought our own games…judge away).

I promise to blog properly about this place at a future point as it really deserves a full review. In the meantime Happy Census 2011!!!

  1. I object to the notion that I ‘interjected’ (all that much)… my comments were very helpful – in fact, I would say highly insightful :-)

  2. Hi Sarah, thought that you may be ineestrted in the Suckling Pig that is available every Tuesday evening over Winter at Gorski and Jones. This dish only started this Tuesday gone and proved to be very popular, a very generous portion with a selection of a side from the menu. If you would like any further details regarding the event please give me a buzz P 9417777 or M 0403750797. Many thanks Meaghan
