When it gets to Friday night post work drinks there are a lot of options in Melbourne. The catch with our pretty city is that there are also a lot of people with the same goal: to celebrate the end of the week.

CJ and I tried to get into Murmur (my third failed attempt) but while there was easily space there was no seating. We then checked out BarBait with no luck (as in we didn’t feel like walking any great distance) so to the ever reliable Hardware Lane we headed.

Now when you think about it, what lures you to a great bar for the first time? Word of mouth, an article or blog, cool venue, uniqueness or a giant sign announcing 2 for 1 cocktails? Can you guess which one drew us into Charlie’s Bar?

Amidst the sprookers and al fresco dining filling the lane is the door to The Mill and the evidently very popular Charlies Bar downstairs. The place was packed with people of all genres closing out the working week and was friendly, cosy and filled with lots of intimate and not so intimate nooks and crannys to sit in. This is very much a slick feeling New York style trendy bar with surprisingly unpretentious barmen who were eager to help serve their throngs of patrons. I could totally see many a mid week catch up here where you get to bags a cozy space for your gang.

We perused the 2 for 1 cocktail happy hour list and selected, from a group of classics and interesting choices, a Russian Spring Fling (?). It was delicious. Tall, cold, sparkly with berries and a twist of lemon to stop it being too sweet. We decided to brave the elements and sit outside so we would be able to chat with ease and people watch. We didn’t notice the cold or drizzle nestled as we were under big awnings and wrapped in our winter finest. In fact we enjoyed ourselves so much that we both ended up there much longer than our later plans really allowed (sorry for being so late girls – you know who you are!).

This place has just been added to my regulars list for a Friday night drink. Thanks Charlie.
