But for me tonight was that night. Dee invited me to join her at fortyfive downstairs to see the production of “the haunting of Daniel Gartrell” starring John Wood(Blue Heelers), Samuel Johnson(Secret Life of Us) and Marcella Russo (Neighbours).

The venue itself is quirky and intimate with a host who is quirky and intimate too. While the venue itself is spacious, with a packed house both the waiting area and seating was packed. It doesn’t have a formal stage so front row seating is a unique experience. I love that arriving and leaving you essentially walk across the stage, feet crackling the strewn leaves (part of this play i believe – not a part of the building). You also get to watch the play unfold while sipping wine or beverage of your choice…I love this touch. I have seen two plays here now and think the venue itself is worth a visit and there is something so lovely about seeing a play..

Now, did you hear me say nudity? It’s minimal, early in the piece and not what I had expected. Woods manages it with aplomb and while it was in no way what i had expected it worked well with his chachter and could never be called gratuitous. The cast carry this, at times disturbing and haunting, play well. It feeds on audio overlays and flashing lights (aka lightning) perhaps a little more than my tastes prefer but it absolutely sets the eerily poetic and ominous tone. The show runs for 95 minutes straight and it flew by although I will be upfront and say the end lost me a little. That there is still a chance to see a cast this strong in an Australian production was fantastic.

I also loved that I was seeing these faces in parson and while it’s probably been a good ten years since watched a show in which they (Woods &Johnson) starred and age has played a role in their lives there voices and talent were as true to them as ever.

It’s running for a bit longer so encourage you to grab a ticket. The venue is located beneath Cumulous Inc so a great place to grab a drink or bite to eat before or after too!

There is so much theater going on I definitely intend to see more.
