There are some places in the Melbourne CBD that are just crazy busy every lunchtime and Kenzan at the back of the Melbourne GPO building is defiantly one of them.

This Japanes eatery has two locations in Melbourne with a more formal restaurant at Collins Place and this lanewayesque dine in and take away restaurant at the GPO. Kenzan inside has limited communal seating but the covered (and heated) lanewayesque area has plenty of seating options as does a small pace inside the GPO itself.

It’s quite a pretty place to sit and watch the Melbourne Suits, Students and shoppers (dont you like my alliteration?) as they rush past or pause to grab a bite.

Kenzan does amazing sushi (especially for vegetarians – usually sold out by 1pm) but on my last visit with Collins we decided to go for the Ramen Soup. I selected vegetarian and Collins went with a beef option. Both dishes were flaversome, served fast and very generous serves and under $15 each. They also have some yummy spices on the table if you want to heat things up a little.

Now as we all know soupey noodles can be hard to consume neatly, so be warned and don’t wear a white dress like I did! It took much careful napkin placement and meticulous chopstick manovering to enable me to leave in the state in which I arrived!

It’s a lovely place to catch up with someone In the CBD that won’t cost you an arm and a leg for lunch. It’s also open and a little calmer on weekend for lunch. I don’t believe the Kenzan GPO does dinner other than on a Thursday/Friday but it is a yummy, and because of the laneway cute stop.
