One of my favorite adventures whilst on holiday was visiting the London Science Museum “Lates” evening where they open in the evening, last Wednesday of each month, for an adults only event.

We arrived at about 7:30ish and were lucky enough to miss the queue and entered this giant museum. The place was packed with mostly twenty something’s to late thirties all happily enjoying beers and wine from the bar (yes, how cool – drinking in a museum as you wander about). It’s an awesome way to see the Science Museum especially something like the science museum which is normally teaming with sticky fingered, loud children (so I guess us with our drinks is probably tame in comparison).

The event is massive and the evening provided not just general public access to the whole museum but had a silent disco, pub quiz, a speed dating event (I wanted to go – yay science boys – but was out voted) and has cockroach tours.

I was enchanted by the idea of the cockroach tours (I had heard tell they involved costumes) and was thrilled near the end of the evening when one wandered past where we were sitting and then ended admits a story and transformation as the roachies returned to human form through twirling and waving of limbs (cute not odd) and removed helmets and shells. I really wish I had been on one and it’s near the top of my to do list for next visit. I may have borrowed a helmet and posed for my own happy snap but here’s a pic of nice couple who did the tour and let me take a photo. Cute right?

We played lots of the games, some group interaction and some individual (including a moral dilemma, would you push an old person in front of a train to save five people? – the bloody cartoon image is where I evidently deviate from norm and pushed the old person over…oops.) as well as lots of other interesting items all over the space. We probably only managed to fit about half in but it was a great night.

The Science Museum is located in the Museum Mile and is an easy walk from the station. It’s also free! I love this about the London museums. The Science Museum Lates whole night is really well done and I think if I was a local its something I would try and go to regularly. Perhaps Melbourne Museum we could do something similar?
