Well, my final Offspring blog. And what a lovely way to wrap up my current tv obsession (from a blog point of view – will still be tuning in on Monday). Sonido on Gertrude St is a small Colombian Cafe only open until four and thus a late addition to my blogging post. Unfortunately it was cerado (Colombian for closed I think) when we tried last weekend so I bribed Bean to meet me for Lunch and a shop this Saturday as she had missed out on all the OP fun last weekend.

Sonido is bright, bustling and beautiful. It’s such a friendly place with random seating everywhere and a gorgeous window bench so you can eat and people watch at the same time.

Bean has done the South American thing and highly recommended Inka Cola (a fluro yellow creamy soda) as an experience. I was on a sugar high for hours.

The food menu is simple with a mix of areapa’s (corn pancakes) and empanadas. We couldn’t decide so split a frijoles con feta arepas and a cheese and spinach empanada with a side of salad.

I meant to take a photo of each of the dishes separately but it looked so good we had split the food before I recalled I was meant to be taking photos.

The empanada was crunchy but tasted a little like spanikopita rather than the Spanish/American empanadas I loved when I lived in the States. The arepa was amazing. It tasted so fresh and healthy and the salsa was a perfect accompaniment. We were both kicking ourself for not having been before.

This cafe is used a bit in Offspring but I had never realized it was Colombian which seems crazy having now been in it.

Afterwards we went for a stroll down Gertrude and Bean managed to grab two gorgeous vintage scarfs which I will try and grab a pic of!

  1. Excellent! I love South American/Mexican food so I’ll head down sometime very soon and give it a try.

Just a heads up, it’s “Colombia” with an “o”, not a “u”. My Colombian Spanish tutor always gave me hell for spelling her country incorrectly >.<

    • Thanks JD – all updated, don’t want a Spanish teacher giving me he’ll *grin*.

Def get down there – it was really tasty and in a great location for a post lunch stroll

  2. Ooh ooh, as a South American…I love empanadas and work really close to Gertrude St, literally walking distance…must check this out!!

    • Its a really great cafe. I wish I worked near enough to go there for work lunch!
