I thought this week I would do a series of posts about looking up in Melbourne. Most people wandering about the city pay little attention to the stunning architecture so prevalent in our city. We seem to have wiped our ground level clear of the beautiful Victorian, turn of the century and art deco buildings that fill the city from the first floor up with generic (ok, sometimes glitteringly pretty) glass store fronts.

So over the next few days I will be featuring some of my favorite buildings from the first floor up and would also love to hear about some of your favorites too – feel free to email me or tweet (@melbourniangirl) me images and I will be happy to include them in posts.

The first one in the Buckley & Nunn Ltd buildings (there are two side by side) in the Bourke St Mall housing David Jones. Have you ever noticed these two stunning buildings? Or the two deer head grotesques that stare at you as you pass down the mall?

I love the facades of the two Buckley & Nunn buildings and often appreciate them without ever stopping to look, today I did and must admit that the deers gave me a bit of a surprise!

Both are beautiful aren’t they (the buildings, not the deer grotesques)?

**my apologies the pics aren’t great, these were snapped on my iPhone…

  1. I’ve had this little pass time myself for a while now – looking up as I walk to admire our buildings. It can be a bit tricky when the streets are busy – I need a sign on my back “stops frequently to look up”

    • Me too, I saw an episode of West Wing years ago where they mentioned snipers always liked to be high up as people rarely look up – ever since I have made a real effort to “look up” and have found some wonderful sights.

Perhaps we could get a bulk order of the signs for our backs?
