You may have begun to work out by now I haunt the NGV quite a bit. I love that it’s a free art gallery in Melbourne and no matter how often I visit I always find something new to see. I am also exceptionally good at getting lost in the connecting galleries.

A few weeks ago we popped in to take a look at one of the exhibitions I hadn’t really taken the time look at- ManStyle. Located up on the second floor in the space that seems dedicated to showing textiles (or jewels?) the NGV is currently running an exhibition looking at men’s fashion from mid 18th Century to present day.

One of the things it was hard not to notice is how exquisitely decorative some of the items were. Although perhaps not the fluffy pants or sequined Hawaii dinner jacket….
(I stand by the term decorative but exquisitely is one of those words that is in the mouth of the speaker)

On one side of the exhibit they ran a reel of different designers, fashion experts and other talking about the role of men’s fashion. It was really interesting and I stayed to watch a few of the reels. Just as I was about to turn and leave Brett Pooley appeared on screen (a Melbourne based sneaker collector – over 400 pairs!) to talk about his Nike Melbourne sneaker. I thought that was rather cool. Unfortunately there was a couple nearby debating a certain displayed vest and I missed some of what he was saying.

A lot of this really just highlighted that while so often we girls get wrapped up in our fashion there are a bunch of guys out there as dedicated to fashion as the most fashioned frenzied female out there.

For a little more info I have lifted the below extract from the NGV website…

Taken from their website…

Fashion & Textiles Gallery, Level 2, NGV International

Fashion & Textiles Gallery 12, Level 2, The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia

Charting a course between absolute restraint and ostentatious display ManStyle explores the extremes of masculine style and some of the most influential ideas that have pervaded menswear over the past three centuries.

Spanning both Fashion & Textile Galleries at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia and NGV International, ManStyle presents a broad survey of menswear from around 1740 to the present. Beginning in the eighteenth century with exquisite brocade and embroidered silk coats, the exhibition then explores the evolution of the modern suit via the elegantly honed lines of the nineteenth century dandy, examining the rise of tailoring with its focus on perfect cut and fit. From tradition to transformation, ManStyle considers changes in proportion, shape and detail as well as material, colour and pattern, including the more radical influence of sportswear, sub-cultural attire and street wear on men’s fashion. In contemporary menswear design new and traditional modes of dressing are continually merging to create new definitions of masculinity.

Featuring over 80 works, Drawn from the NGV’s Australian and international collections the exhibition incorporates clothes, accessories, paintings, and multimedia. Influential designers represented include Thom Browne, Pierre Cardin, Morrissey Edmiston, Jean Paul Gaultier, Nom*D, Tommy Nutter, Stuart Membery, Rick Owens, Perks and Mini (PAM), Romance Was Born, Walter Van Beirendonck, Vivienne Westwood, Bernhard Willhelm and WORLD
