I finally made it the Myer Mural Hall! There was an incident earlier in the year where I tried to follow some tourists in – unfortunately they had a run in with security so I hightailed it out of there and have had to remain content with craning my neck to peer through the gap in the window. Yes – I look suspicious.

The hall (think deco ballroom not drafty community hall) was open as part of the Melbourne Open House Day, 2011 and was consistently packed with interested viewers.

Bean, Dino and I naturally took the long way up through the recently renovated Myer Melbourne (which I love – they are now also open till 9pm each night) until we made it up to the sixth floor. Once there we were ushered through a stunning pre-function area that I wish Myer would turn into a champagne bar (similar to those at some of the big London stores) as it is gorgeous and would be a perfect place to meet friends for a post or pre shop dose of bubbles!

Through large doors we swept, as I imagine one must in a space like this, into this giant ballroom with chandeliers, wooden parquetry, a paired staircase and giant windows…oh and the famous murals.

I feel like we were so lucky with our Open House choices. The hall is stunning – the ten murals (eight originals) are 150 foot long and 60 foot wide (i.e. MEGA) and are to celebrate the Arts, the Seasons and the achievements of women. How nice! The murals we painted by Australian Napier Waller – isn’t that a name to inspire your imagination? – and I was told they are considered one of the finest examples of art deco art in Australia. Yay Melbourne!

While chatting with one of the guides she mentioned to me that to go on the stairs you actually need to sign an OHS waiver – very reassuring! If you are wondering why you haven’t heard of it before it has been under renovations for four years and they have done a lovely job refreshing the space.

The hall it’s self hosted Chanel and Dior fashion shows in the forties, grand charity balls, a top luncheon spot and is now available for venue hire, and I am very pleased to tell you… High Tea! on the last Sunday of each month they will be running high tea. And yes it is absolutely on my to do list – just need to find the perfect hat first. It’s that sort of place.
