With Melbourne weather currently being, well, Melbourne weather, it’s making me crave a nice safe cozy little place to catch up with my friends and sip wine. And over the last year of all the places I have visited, Gerald’s Bar in Rathdowne Village, has to remain one of my favorite places to fit this description.

Bean, Dino and I visited Gerald’s Bar for the first time in May last year – The original post can be found here.

I am almost tempted not to share this beautiful bar nestled in the middle of Rathdowne Village. It was a freezing cold and rainy night and it took me nearly 20 minutes (instead of 2) to drive from the city there, and every minute was worth it.

The team running this amazing venue were so welcoming that it felt more like we had dropped into a friends house than a commercial bar. My friends were seated when I arrived and I headed to the bar to order some wine. Each evening they open just three whites, a champagne and three reds- if you are there early enough you may even get to help select one of the bottles of the evening. I went with the Marlborough Sounds Sav Blanc and it was perfect – I wish I had grabbed the name. It was the best white I have had this year.

While ordering the bartender one of our hosts for the evening and I commiserated about the rain and i was ushered back to my friends and told they would bring across the menu in a moment. The menu charmingly written on brown paper (the kind tied up with string) was hung from the chair in front of us and had a nice complement of interesting dishes.

But we are a fussy group blending a vegetarian with a doesn’t like vegetables. So after a little discussion we came to the perfect solution. Given the rain. And the cold. And the menu. We chose rhubarb and apple crumble. With custard.

It was perhaps the only thing that could have made this place better.

The crumble was crumbly the apple crisp yet smooshy (you know what I mean) and the rhubarb tart and sweet. The pouring custard complimented the dish perfectly and I imagine we three looked like nothing so much as the cat who got the custard.

We proceeded to sip our wine and those of us driving were saddened by our ability to only have one glass. The environment was so warm and snuggly I find it hard to believe we weren’t in front of a fire. Our evenings hosts chatted and interacted with their guests in such friendly way that there was none of the pretensions a bar like this might have had. The guests were a varied blend but everyone sort of shared that look, like how lucky are we to be here. And we were.
