Homemade Christmas Crackers may not sound the height of elegance – but they are a lot of fun! In July I hosted my first annual Christmas in July party but stumbled across a problem – no Christmas crackers were available in the shops! For me a Christmas lunch simply wouldn’t be the same without a cracker with some random toy or trinket. So, my solution? I made my own!! Homemade Christmas Crackers were easy to make, perfectly matched my colour scheme and leave the door open for you to get a little creative with the gifts….can you imagine finding something from Tiffanys inside? Well me either but a girl can hope!
Let me take you back to July 20th and my homemade christmas crackers…
I am preparing for my Christmas in July party!! Now, some of you may roll your eyes at my mid year enthusiasm but for me I love the chance to get a dose of the holiday season in the middle of the year. It is one of my obsessions after all…
I will be perfectly honest and admit I have never been to or hosted a Christmas in July party before and I keep realizing there are lots of things I hadn’t thought of yet. While I have found a few stores have small Christmas supplies available (generally at inflated prices) I had yet to see even the tackiest of Christmas crackers!
As ever, google search was my saviour and provided heaps of options for homemade Christmas crackers and Internet ordering. I debated ordering cheapies at over inflated prices but as traditionalist and as a girl on a budget this didn’t seem ideal. And lets be honest no one ever likes the prizes and it’s just more to throw out at the end of the day. So I decided to look for reusable crackers and found a great idea of making my own felt ones. I love that this means I can choose the color combinations, pre fill with an alternative be it something from Tiffany (sorry guys – that won’t be this party) or just a random toy. I remember years ago my family had custom made crackers from my sister one year and I was so thrilled to have a personalized surprise!
A quick trip to Lincraft, eight sheets of felt, some ribbon and some double sided tape and I was sorted (mental note stock up in December of the cracker strips – more fun with a bang!). I got home and cut up some old folders so I could make tubes and then just wrapped the felt around it and ribboned the edges. Really easy and I love that we will get to have crackers with lunch. They won’t bang but am making custom jokes (perhaps make my friends explode with laughter?) and will find something cute to pop in them so hopefully they will work well.
I also am now sorted for my December Christmas too!
