Who’s up for Gløgg…
A surprise stop on Melbourne Open House Day was Ikea Denmark House. We were strolling back into the city after visiting the Hellenic Museum and heading to the Myer Mural Hall when we noticed one of the many "look at me" "I'm open" and "In here" signs waving out the front. Tucked up on the third floor of a very traditional office block it felt like stepping into the middle of Copenhagen. The space is open, airy and bright and was a real surprise to us. We visited the meeting room and then explored ... Read More

A Hellenic mint….
As a part of the Melbourne Open House Day, our third visit was to the Hellenic Museum located in the Old Mint ( the kind that made coins not the sort you inevitably find a little sticky in an old coat pocket). I have wanted to go here for a few years now - I loved the idea of seeing inside this gorgeous building that feels more English Manor (ohhh butler!) than Greek Museum. Trade Up…
The next stop on our Melbourne Open House Day expedition was the Victorian Trades Hall. It's the gorgeous old building on the bottom of Lygon - it usually has a huge pro/anti banner on it and houses events during the comedy festival and has a bookshop in the basement. When we arrived we were allowed to wander about. This was both cool and a bit creepy - I think we went off the beaten path a bit. The interior feels well worn and I was enchanted by the wear groves in the stairs but some areas, ... Read More

My heart belongs to a Royal…
No, not the dishy princes or some handsome European (although applications for enamourment are accepted) instead our very own Royal Exhibition Building. Of all the buildings I love in Melbourne - and there's a lot which I shan't bore you with just now (but you know its all coming right?) this is my favorite. One look at this stunning building will begin to tell you of my love (i am just as likely to swoon over a beautiful blue stone as a gorgeous guy) and I became further enamored when I read ... Have you ever had a kookaburra land on your shoulder…
No? I wish could say the same... But to add a little context to the tale let me begin by wishing you Happy Melbourne Open House Day day! I am the sort of person who loves plans, lists and adventures (Enid Blighton style as opposed to Bourne Identity). So with one of my favorite Melbourne weekends looming I began to pull together a scarily time tabled outline of a day scooting about Melbourne getting to see inside all of the places I normally am not allowed to put my sticky beak into. I promise ... Read More
