Vue de Monde is one of the Melbourne restaurants. You know the sort – fine dining geared at celebrations, proposals and a weeks pay. While for many, venues such as these remain elusive, Vue de Monde graciously branched out into bistro and then even more accessibly into a chain of cafes.

One Sunday on my way to meet friends I realized I needed caffeine. The good sort. Driving out of the city and into the suburbs I wasn’t sure where I might be able to grab a cup to go and then, magically (theses things so often are) a car spot opened in front of Cafe Vue 401.

I have wanted to try this place for so long – I had built it up in my mind as somewhere so trendy and glamourous that I might feel awkward heading in wearing my Sunday casual. Not the case, while the cafe is really nicely designed it doesn’t feel exclusively fancy, in fact the only thing that made it exclusive was the $5 charge for my small soy latte.

While my coffee was being prepared I looked on as people sipped coffee, ate scrumptious looking cakes and celebrated a birthday. I must admit I found the idea of sitting in the demi bird cage appealing.

While it wasn’t as fancy as I had imagined (and kind of hoped for) it was a nice cafe. My coffee ready, I took it’s strong sweetness with me and determined I might need to come back one day, or perhaps try the one at the Heidi Gallery for tea with friends.
