So, in my pre 9am daze (and pre caffeine!) I was a little startled to have a referee jog past me, blow a whistle and wave a flag standing as I was on Swanston St. In the middle of the CBD. On a Wednesday. In the morning.

So in my ever curious state (don’t mention the cat) I began to notice more sport/referee types all dotted about the area and then I noticed that this section of Swanston between Lt Lonsdale and La Trobe has been reopened and now houses a very pretty new, both sides of the street, tram stop.

The team of sports “professionals” are there to ensure those of us who can be a little oblivious to change note the new tram stop, the changed bicycle traffic conditions and of course the oncoming trams. It’s great that cabs and non sign readers (dare I say ignorers) can no longer drive this portion of Swanston. This thrills me as both a cyclist, well someone who rides a bike if that was too much of a stretch, and as a pedestrian and as a tram rider.

The team helping us learn the new ropes are bright, fun and helpful. It really comes across they are having a great time helping Melburnians and tourists alike get the hang of it. With a real sense of the fun, frivolous and silly it’s hard to take offense as they ensure you don’t block bicycles, cross at the right spot and look after your street safety. I don’t think they can pose for photos but everyone, like me, was busy taking snaps! I briefly chatted with a Yarra Trams rep who let me know they have been shared with us for two weeks (this and next) by the City of Melbourne. Thanks City of Melbourne – what a fun way to welcome a smart new area to our pretty city!
