For some reason I always thought if If I wanted yummy fresh fruit and veggies straight from the farm my beloved Queen Vic was my only option. I am not sure why looking for local farmers markets (which I lived off of in NY) never seemed an option for me here. And then I discovered the Gleadell St Farmers Market. Located oddly enough on…you guessed it…Gleadell Street Market in Richmond, this Saturday farmers market is a weekly or fortnightly visit for me.

They have a great range of seasonal produce, it’s very very cheap and it has that market environment that mixes up my shopping experience. The Gleadell Street Market  has mostly fresh fruit and veggies and has the biggest range earliest in the day from 7am, by about 11:30-12 (they shut around 1pm) everything gets even cheaper – 6 avocados for $2, a bag of tangelos for $1 – sold. They also have a great range of breads and pastries, fresh flowers at great prices, coffee and some cheese on offer along with a really diverse organic veggie stall.20110623-110254.jpg

If you live close enough there’s plenty of places to tie a bike up, it’s close to the public transport on Bridge Rd and the parking on Highgett St has a fairly good turnover. You can even take your dog! The Highgett St end has a great cafe that’s always packed with lots of veggie and organic items on offer and I hope (to assist my dear readers of course) to do a post on it. I love coming here on a Saturday, browsing and getting inspiration from whats on offer -movee aside masterchef – and getting my fresh food needs (and perhaps some yummy bread) while sipping my coffee. I also love that Binky can come shopping with me at the Gleadell Street Market, even if she always asks for apples she never eats…

  1. Hi MG,
I adore the market culture in Melbourne! :) Twice when I was in Melbourne I visited the QV Market. Absolutely <3 the place! :) Although I only visited twice, I already have a few favorite stalls there, there's this guy selling metal vintage looking pictures, the QV Sweets guy (I think his name is Chris, super friendly & chatty :D ), the very quiet gentleman selling soaps, and the stall selling Swords Wine – I <3 the Rose & Riesling !:) There is also this quirky little shop, Soap Box, just outside QV Market, selling natural toiletries. Oh how I adore QV Market! :) I must definitely return to Melbourne soon! :)

    • I love those vintage metal pictures too – always spend some time there browsing for my house. It’s sounds like you know the market well – it’s such a nice place for a browse. Hope you get to come back again soon!
